Paul and the Printing Press Sara Ware Bassett 9781491036266 Books
Follows the standard plot with standard character types for Sara Ware Bassett and the Invention series (think 1950's family T.V.). It is good tool for learning the history of printing through modern 1920. Early history is some what weak with a only a minor mention of China. The development of paper is also discussed, though not in detail. I give it 5 stars for readability and depth of content appropriate for the audience which is teenagers who like to read and need some history on printing.Product details

Paul and the Printing Press Sara Ware Bassett 9781491036266 Books Reviews
Of the half dozen Sara Bassett's Books I've read, either the main character becomes actively involved (e.g. The Story of Wool) OR, as in this case (Paul and The Printing Press), others TELL the main character, Paul, about printing and its history. More than half the book elapses before even Paul expresses, and is offered a chance to see an actual press. Paul is a senior and becomes the Editor-In-Chief of the school's new newspaper. In this position Paul deals with the difficulties in building a circulation and later, a possible threat of a local publisher taking control of the school's paper. Paul's concerns throughout the book remain focused on starting and making the newspaper a success. Paul is not involved in the printing or any printing press beyond that of a newspaper editor's concerns. If you get the idea I would prefer "Paul and the printing Press" to have Paul getting some hands-on experience with a printing press, you're right.
James Jenkins review is very good. I would add that since it is written for a young audience, it did well to not dive really deep into history, but indeed made learning a little more about how lucky we are even now to not only have easy means of printing but also the means of sharing our ideas in print.
Learn the history of printing through the eyes of a young man starting a High School News Paper.
Kipper wants a printing press to create a high school paper. Much travelogue about printing and writing ensues. He's given several nearly impossible tasks, which takes him about 10 minutes of talking with his father to accomplish. More travelogue. It becomes more popular than the regular paper. More travelogue. Stolen money, bribery, etc. More travelogue.
It's impressive how everyone he meets knows the detailed history of printing, including numerous dates and names of obscure charcters. It's s typical pulp "xxx boys do xxx" story, but almost includes more historical monologues than actual story.
